Palestinian resistance launches surprise attack on Israel – Updates to come

Imemc, OCT 8, 2023

by Kathryn Shi'hadah

Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, has launched a major, multi-pronged, surprise attack on Israel – 200 Israelis dead, 900 injured; Israeli forces are now bombing Gaza – 232 Palestinians dead, 1600 injured… Here is a rundown of this unfolding story.

After decades of Israeli occupation and human rights abuses, and after a 20-month-long mass nonviolent effort, Palestinians in Gaza launched a surprise operation against Israel on early Saturday morning. Its scale is unprecedented, involving aerial, sea and ground operations. Israel immediately began bombing Gaza and has turned off electricity to the enclave, leaving most of its two million inhabitants in the dark and hospitals dangerously impacted. There are now 200 Israelis dead, 9000 injured, and an unknown number captured; and 232 Palestinians dead and 1,600 injured.

Israeli forces, partly funded by the $13 million dollars per day that U.Spoliticians have voted for them, are one of the world’s most powerful militaries, their weaponry vastly dwarfing Palestinians’. Today’s Palestinian land incursions largely consisted of individuals riding motorcycles and pickup trucks.

Hamas spokesperson Khalid Qadoumi told Al Jazeera that the group’s military operation is in “response to all the atrocities the Palestinians have faced over the decades,” and the Hamas deputy chief said the group is engaged “in a battle for freedom.” Hamas military chief Mu'hammed Dhaif explained: “We have decided to put an end to all of the occupation’s crimes”; senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh indicated that recent provocations at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem were a major reason for the surprise attack.

Other Israeli provocations include increased violence against Palestinians by illegal Israeli settlers, Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners,  and a spike in killings of Palestinians by the Israeli military. The UN has said 2023 is the deadliest year for Palestinians since it started counting fatalities in 2006.

In October alone, Israeli soldiers killed 4 Palestinians (including youth), attacked a Palestinian funeral procession, abducted at least 75 (10 of them children), and shot or otherwise injured at least 100.

Hamas actions have so far included: launching thousands of rockets toward Israel (for background on rockets see this), infiltrating Israel by land, sea, and air, and taking prisoners of war which it hopes to exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Groups broke down the barrier wall that imprisons Gaza and entered several Israeli communities near the border. Fighters have also captured a number of Israeli military vehicles, in addition to the hostages.

After being surprised by the scope of the Palestinian offensive, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, “Citizens of Israel, we are at war [and will] fight back on a scale and intensity that the enemy has so far not experienced. The enemy will pay an unprecedented price.”

Israeli jet fighters destroyed a Palestine high-rise in western Gaza City with several missiles. The building has approximately 100 residential apartments. (photo) A building destroyed by Israeli strikes in Gaza City on Saturday. (photo)

According to Israeli Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai, the Israeli military is engaged in “a complex attack in the area around Gaza,” that at the time included 21 active fronts.

In Gaza, Israeli warplanes reportedly destroyed a 5-story residential building, hit a hospital, and targeted an ambulance.

Some media outlets refer to the Palestinian resistance fighters as “terrorists” – but under international law, armed resistance is the right of occupied people.

Critical context

Israel has held the 2 million Palestinians of Gaza under siege since 2007, blocking access to medical supplies, medicine, food, and many other staples. The people of Gaza staged a 20-month nonviolent protest against Israel from March 2018 till the beginning of the Covid pandemic in December 2020 – and were met with Israeli snipers and airstrikes that killed hundreds (NOTE: read about this protest, called the Great March of Return, here).

Mainstream media that describe Israel and Hamas as having fought “multiple wars” since the siege began, fail to contextualize the statement. Over 700,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homes and villages in 1948; many of them and their descendants live in refugee camps in Palestine and scattered throughout the Arab world, awaiting their internationally guaranteed right of return. Millions have been under occupation since 1967; human rights organizations like Amnesty International consider Palestinians in the entire region to be living under apartheid rule.

US President Joe Biden has expressed solidarity with Israel and “fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself.

Separately, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has as history of helping Israel, declared that the US “unequivocally condemns the appalling attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israel, including civilians and civilian communities.”

While brutal force has been used to create Zionist Israel and sustain it thus far, Zionist claims to Palestine are false. Actually, from the five thousand years of known written history, there has been a continuous Palestinian-Canaanite presence in the Holy Land. Despite the Zionist false claims, the ancient Israelites ruled part of the land for only 85 years (during the reign of David, Solomon, and Solomon's son).

After that, the Egyptians conquered Palestine-Canaan in 925 BC, followed by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans, before the Arab Muslim rule, starting from 636 AD.

By the Time Jesus started his mission, the three population groups of Canaanites, Palestinians, and Israelites were melted together in religion and language. Most of them became Christians when Constantine converted in 313 AD. Then, most of them became Muslims in the 7th and 8th centuries AD.

So, Palestinian Muslims, Christians, and Jews are the ones who have the right to claim descent from ancient Israelites, Palestinians, and Canaanites, not Zionists from other continents.

TULKAREM, (PIC) +-

Two Palestinians were reportedly killed at dawn Thursday when the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) opened fire at a Palestinian vehicle near Shufa village in the southeast of Tulkarim.

According to different news reports, Israeli soldiers showered a car carrying two Palestinians with bullets, critically wounding them.

Medical sources said that the young men were both dead, adding that the soldiers prevented ambulance crews from evacuating them.

The Palestinian health ministry identified the young martyrs as Abdul-Rahman Atta and Hudhayfa Faris.

The Hebrew media claimed that these two young men opened fire from a car at an Israeli vehicle or motorcycle near the settlement of Avnei Hefetz, before Israeli soldiers chased them and shot them dead at the entrance of Shufa village.

The Israeli occupation army said that an M16 rifle was found in the slain young men’s vehicle.

Earlier at dawn, resistance fighters from Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas intensively opened fire at infiltrating Israeli occupation forces in Tulkarem refugee camp and detonated homemade explosive devices at their vehicles. One soldier was reported injured during the clashes.

Israeli Occupation Soldiers Kill A Palestinian Near Ramallah

 SEP 30, 2023

On Friday night, Israeli occupation soldiers killed a Palestinian and injured another after opening fire at their car near Al-Biereh city in the occupied West Bank’s central part.

The soldiers fired a barrage of live rounds at a Palestinian car near the illegal Psagot Israeli colony, built on stolen Palestinian lands in Jabal At-Tawil near Al-Bierih, and later took the two Palestinians to an Israeli medical center.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said its medics rushed to the scene after the soldiers shot the two Palestinians, but the army did not allow them to approach them to provide essential first aid.

The Israeli occupation army claimed its soldiers shot two Palestinians who “hurled Molotov cocktails at a military post near Psagot” and added that no soldiers were injured.

The Public Relations Department of the Health Ministry in Ramallah has confirmed that the soldiers fatally shot Muhammed Jibril Rommanih, 18, and injured another young man, Mohammad Abu Rabea’, after opening fire at their car.

It added that Rommaneh succumbed to serious abdominal gunshot wounds at an Israeli medical center and stated that the other Palestinian suffered injuries to his lower limbs.

Rommana was from the Al-Am’ari refugee camp, south of Al-Biereh city, in the Ramallah and Al-Biereh Governorate.

After his death, dozens of Palestinians marched in front of his home in the refugee camp, carrying Palestinian flags and chanting for ongoing resistance until liberation and independence.

Israeli Occupation Soldiers Kill Two Palestinians In Tulkarem

 SEP 24, 2023

Earlier Sunday, many Israeli military vehicles invaded Noor Shams refugee camp east of Tulkarim in the occupied West Bank’s northwestern part before the soldiers fatally shot two Palestinians in their heads.

Update: The Palestinian Health Ministry has confirmed that the soldiers killed Abdul-Rahman Sulayman Abu Daghash, 32, after shooting him with a live round in the head.

Palestinian medics rushed him to the Thabit Hospital in Tulkarim, where he was officially pronounced dead.

Palestine TV has reported that the armored military vehicles, including at least two D9 bulldozers, caused excessive damage to the refugee camp, including bulldozing and destroying streets, alleys, cars, homes, shops, and infrastructure, including electricity networks and water pipelines.

The bulldozers first started by destroying the main street leading to the refugee camp, and is also the entrance of Tulkarim city, linking it with Jenin and Nablus.

Palestinian resistance fighters managed to detonate explosives charge near an armored military vehicle and a military bulldozer, causing damage, before the army towed it away.

Shortly after the army invaded the refugee camp, the soldiers killed Osaid Farhan Abu Ali (Jab’awi), 21, after shooting him with a live round to the head.

Medical sources said the young man was rushed to the medical center but succumbed to his serious wounds and that the soldiers also shot another Palestinian in the head and prevented Palestinian medics from reaching him.

Palestine TV stated that Israeli military vehicles tried to ram a Palestinian ambulance while trying to reach Osaid to provide lifesaving first aid and move him to a hospital.

Palestine TV correspondent said the soldiers prevented the medics from reaching Osaid while he was bleeding, but the medics insisted to perform their duties and took the Palestinian to the hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.

Media sources said many armored vehicles, including at least one bulldozer, invaded the refugee camp and started bulldozing and destroying streets and infrastructure.

The sources added that the soldiers stormed and ransacked many homes and buildings before deploying sharpshooters on their rooftops.

Many Palestinians protested the invasion before the soldiers fired a barrage of live fire, rubber-coated steel bullets, and gas bombs.

Palestinian resistance fighters also exchanged fire with the soldiers and detonated an explosive charge near an armored bulldozer.

A general strike was declared in Tulkarim to mourn the two slain Palestinians.
